LESS SCHOOL. MORE ENTREPRENEURSHIP.
While in school, I won a venture pitch competition and started working for serial entrepreneurs in Austin, TX, immersing myself in the world of startups - the world of risk taking, inventing, innovating, problem solving, and adapting. The world that rewards fearlessness, teamwork, and most importantly, the big idea.
I learned from venture capitalists, serial entrepreneurs, ex-McKinsey consultants and Stanford MBA's. I used every tool in my ad background to help entrepreneurs launch new products, start new retail ventures from scratch, restructure old business models, or rebrand existing startups.
This honed me into the kind of idea person that doesn't come from a strict ad background. These different work and life experiences allow me to think like a creative hybrid and at the same time prevent me from being a creative clone. These experiences are what set me apart.
Here are some more of my work and projects that you wouldn't find in a traditional ad portfolio.
TWEETPORT - Digital Digest/ New Product Launch/ Startup
TweetPort.net uses algorithms from Digg, Delicious, Facebook, and Twitter to synthesize only the most relevant and important tweets from your Twitter network into one daily digest in your inbox.
Social Media Consultant/ Business Strategist/ Brand Specialist/ Copywriter: Linda Yang
RISEAUSTIN.ORG - Event Conference/ Entrepreneurial Movement/ Startup
While I was working for Businessweek's Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs, they launched an initiative called RISE (Relationship Information Series for Entrepreneurs). I worked in their innovation lab/ startup incubator at the time, and was promoted to Program Coordinator of RISE.
RISEaustin.org is a city-wide, SXSW style conference that happens every year, open to entrepreneurs for free. It had only just begun when I was hired, and today, is a global initiative.
Program Coordinator/ Marketing Coordinator/ Event Planner/Web Producer/Massive Networker/ Doer of all things big or small: Linda Yang
MPOWER LABS - Startup Lab/Incubator of Mpower Ventures Portfolio of Companies
While I've worked at various agencies, what started my obsession with the big idea was working at an entrepreneurial startup lab/incubator.
Basically, if you take an advertising creative and put them in a startup incubator, you get an idea person on steroids. That was me.
I helped in an assistant capacity to launch four different companies from scratch, some of which have been featured in BusinessWeek, The Economist, and Fast Company.
I learned a TON. I watched entrepreneurs band together in a basement and start company after company. I fully absorbed a mentality of teamwork, risk taking, and the power of a great idea.
Most importantly,
I took all this experience and applied it to ads.
